My Favorite Illustration from the Book
King Bidgood's in the Bathtub
This illustration is just one of the many superb illustrations in this book by Don and Audrey Wood who both live and work in Santa Barbra California. The context of the illustration comes from the background of the author and illustrator who are a husband/wife team. Don is the illustrator and Audrey is the author. They have created many books together that are created in a similar writing and illustration style as this book. Each page has stunning illustrations and so it was hard for me to pick just one that I loved so I have included two more illustrations from this book on my blog page in addition to the one I will be sharing in class. I chose this image out of the 3 and it is my favorite because of how expressive and active the characters are. The illustration is for a children's book and its purpose is to add images to words that tell a story. The message of the image relates directly to the text. The author uses the text to write out the story, but the type is minimal and simple as to not distract from the illustrations. The illustrator uses captivating imagery to vividly tell a show the story to the young readers who are their intended audience. The illustrations are more important than the text because the communication objective of illustrations in children's books like this one is to convey a message or story without words. Most young children are still learning to read text and so they rely on the use of imagery to understand the story. The medium the illustrator used to create this illustration was oil paint, although sometimes he uses acrylic paint and pastels. For more information about Don and Audrey, visit Audrey Wood's Blog.
